What can you do about a shoulder that stays sore?

Start with how the soreness began and which movements bring it on. Then compare simple relief, an exam, and non-surgical care without rushing your choice.

- Night soreness has useful clues
- Gentle movement often beats complete rest
- A scan doesn't make the decision

Tempe keeps errands, bike rides, and court play close together each day. When your shoulder starts aching, sleep and simple reaches may get harder first.

Most gradual soreness comes with joint wear, stiffness, or a tired tendon. I'd first ask when it began, where it hurts, and which motion sets it off.

## What does ordinary shoulder soreness feel like?

A worn or irritated shoulder often aches over the upper arm. That side may ache when you lie down, reach, dress, or drive.

Stiffness points toward a joint that isn't moving well, while weakness tells another story. The full pattern tells more than one sore spot on a chart.

## Why did it start bothering you now?

The trouble may build after more lifting, serving, or time on handlebars. Sometimes there wasn't one injury; the shoulder simply stopped keeping up.

Joint wear can also make motion rough and sore after rest. A tendon problem often feels worse when your hand moves above shoulder height.

## What can you try before making an appointment?

Keep the arm moving gently, but trim the task that clearly stirs it up. You don't need to prove anything by pushing through a sharp catch.

At night, try resting the arm on a pillow. If heat or cold feels good, use it briefly and protect your skin.

## What happens if home care isn't enough?

An exam checks motion, strength, and the way the soreness began. A scan sometimes helps, though it can't explain every ache by itself.

QC Kinetix provides regenerative treatment options for ongoing soreness, and your first conversation there costs nothing, so you can hear about time, cost, and fit before deciding on any care. Ask what to expect and when you'll know whether it helped.

## Which Tempe activities may keep your shoulder sore?

Riding around Tempe Town Lake can hold your arms in one position for a long stretch. Pickleball adds repeated overhead work, while Hayden Butte may bring a quick balance reach.

You don't have to quit every activity while the shoulder settles. Trim the move that causes the flare, then rebuild strength for that task.

1. A systematic review of 61 studies across high-, middle- and low-income countries found a MEDIAN community prevalence of shoulder pain of 16% (range 0.67% to 55.2%), a median primary-care prevalence of 2.36%, and a median incidence of 37.8 per 1,000 persons per year. Estimates were generally higher for women and in high-income countries.

2. In the MOON Shoulder prospective cohort of 452 patients with symptomatic, ATRAUMATIC full-thickness rotator cuff tears, physical therapy succeeded in more than 70% of patients at 10 years: only 115 (27.0%) had surgery at any point over the decade. Patient-reported outcomes improved with physical therapy and did NOT decline over 10 years in those who never had surgery. The strongest predictor of early surgery was low patient expectation of physical therapy, not tear anatomy.

3. In a nationally representative Finnish population sample of 602 adults aged 41-76 who had bilateral 3-Tesla shoulder MRI regardless of symptoms, rotator cuff abnormalities were found in 98.7% of participants (25% tendinopathy, 62% partial-thickness tear, 11% full-thickness tear). Abnormalities were present in 96% of ASYMPTOMATIC shoulders. Only full-thickness tears were more common in symptomatic shoulders, and that difference all but disappeared after adjustment (absolute difference 0.8%, 95% CI -3.4% to 6.0%).

4. The GRASP trial randomized 708 adults with a rotator cuff disorder to progressive exercise (up to 6 sessions), a single best-practice advice session, or either of those preceded by a corticosteroid injection. Over 12 months there was no evidence of a difference in Shoulder Pain and Disability Index between progressive exercise and one advice session (adjusted mean difference -0.66, 99% CI -4.52 to 3.20), and no evidence of a difference between having a corticosteroid injection and not having one.
